It’s perfectly permissible to divide the tithe. To understand why, let’s look at some background concerning tithing.
Under the old covenant, the Israelites were to take their tithe (one tenth of their increase), place it in a basket, present it to the high priest and say, “…With this gift I acknowledge to the Lord your God that I have entered the land he swore to our ancestors he would give us” (Deuteronomy 26:2-3). This was the Promised Land flowing with milk and honey.
Under the new covenant, we have also come into a new land, so to speak. Colossians 1:13 says that we have been rescued from the kingdom of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of God’s Son. As believers we are living in the kingdom of God and have entered into our inheritance in Jesus Christ with all its rights and privileges.
Jesus is our High Priest under the new covenant. When we tithe, we should present our tithes to Jesus and confess we have been rescued from the dominion of Satan and transferred into the kingdom of God. We should also rejoice in all the good He has given to us and our households, and expect His supernatural increase.
Jesus doesn’t take our tithes to heaven to store in a vault. He turns right around and blesses us. He spends them so we are fed spiritually through ministry, as well as multiplying it back for our financial needs! Since the tithe belongs to God, we trust Him to show us where to place it. The important thing for you to do is be obedient to place the tithe where He directs.
The Lord may direct you to place your entire tithe in one place or sow in several places. Often, you will find that you are being directed to tithe into your local church or a ministry that is feeding you spiritually.
Remember, God loves a cheerful giver! Tithing is just the beginning of God’s system of giving because we can give of ourselves every day! Whether it’s being kind to another person or sharing the good news of the gospel with someone in need, God desires that we be a giving people.
Commit to the Lord that you will give of yourself as He directs. Whether it’s your time, talents, finances or abilities, God will use whatever you offer Him, and He rewards those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6)!
