BOOK REVIEW: The Art of Prayer – Kenneth E. Hagin

The book was first released under the title The Art of Intercession before it was changed, because intercession is only a type of prayer but the scope of the book covers more kinds of prayer, this re-edited version reflects some of the additional illumination the author received over the few years with the desire to stir believers to commit themselves to prayer so that the purpose of God can be consummated in the earth.

The chapters in this book on the lost art of prayer covers the following: The first chapter is about WHY PRAY? The author quoted John Wesley who said “it seems God is limited by our prayer life – He can do nothing for humanity unless someone asks him”.

Kenneth Hagin noted that when he was reading a comment on the quote by another author who said “why this is (John Wesley’s quote) I do not know”. The he asked himself “why doesn’t he know” he found out that he doesn’t know either, yet the statement is correct. Find out his discoveries in the book.

The second chapter deliberated on the various kinds of prayer, Ephesians 6:18 says Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; Notice that says, “praying … with All Prayer…” The Amplified Bible reads, “Pray … with All (manner of) Prayer…” the author noted that the church world makes a mistake in not differentiating between those different kinds of praying. We simply put all prayer in the same sack and shake it all out together.

Many prayers are not working because people are using the wrong rules and laws. Some of the kinds of prayer include, The prayer of faith (Matthew 21:22, Mark 11:24), Prayer of Consecration (Luke 22:42), Prayer of commitment (I Peter 5:7), Prayer of Worship (Luke 24: 52,53), prayer of Agreement (Matthew 18:18-20). The author has taken his time to explain some of the kinds of prayer in the subsequent chapters.

Supplication defined is the focus of Chapter three, where he said the nature of supplication is much more heartfelt than a casual request. The word supplication means a humble, earnest, entreaty or request. Noting that one of the things for which supplication is made is or labourers to be sent into God’s harvest.

The chapter five is on Intercession Defined, the purpose of the definition kinds of prayer is not to limit or confine prayer to a set of rules and regulations, but to give a better understating of what the Bible teaches about each type of prayer.

He noted that for a long time, almost all prayer was called intercession or it was thought that intercession was the only effective kind of praying but in reality, the most effective prayer is the prayer the Holy Spirit inspires which is needed at the moment.

By briefly definition from the author, intercession is standing in the gap in praying between a person or persons, who have provoked judgment upon themselves through their wrongdoing, and the actual execution of that judgment.

There are about twenty six chapters in this book, don’t be sacred, not too voluminous for you to read, its 209 pages.

Other chapters I will love you to look out for are, Love: the foundation of successful prayer, Boldness, what is praying in the spirit?, Not so quite prayer, interceding for the losses, excesses which contains some controversial issues about prayer. Do well to get the book and glorify God for the light of His word!

Jesus loves you, accept Him today, tomorrow might be too late.
