The book is divided into three parts, part one focuses on the topic, The Holy Spirit and Tongues with chapter one on four common objections to speaking in tongues.
However, the author highlighted reasons, why prominence is given to speaking in tongues;
1. Speaking with other tongues is always manifested when one is baptized with the Holy Ghost. It is the supernatural evidence of the Holy Spirit’s infilling in a person’s life.
2. The spiritual gifts of tongues and interpretation of tongues are distinctive of this dispensation in which we live (1 Cor.12:1-11).
3. The Apostle Paul gave prominence to the subject of tongues. In fact, in his first letter to the Corinthian church, he wrote quite a bit about it. (See First Corinthians 14.) Why did Paul give so much prominence to tongues? Because then, as now, the subject was much misunderstood.
One of the common objections is that Jesus didn’t speak in tongues, so I don’t have to either. The author ascent it to be true, he justified that it is made available in the dispensation of Holy Spirit and began with the outpouring of the Holy Ghost on the day of Pentecost as recorded in Acts 2.
The second is Objection is Tongues been of the devil while the third is that Tongues have ceased while the last is that only the apostles could pray for people to receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
Salvation and the in filing of the Holyghost are according to are two separate experiences as John 14:17 says . . . Ye know him ; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be IN you. But there is an experience that is beyond the infilling which is Holy Ghost coming upon you in power and the initial evidence of speaking infilling of the HolyGhost is the evidence of speaking in tongues, a divine utterance as recorded in Acts 2:1-4. Which need no tarrying before reception.
In Chapter six, the author opined that God will visit hungry hearts “whatever people call the baptism in the Holy Ghost, God has made this precious gift available to all who call on His Name! Any believer anywhere just has to be hungry for more of God and get filled with the Spirit!”
Meanwhile, there are also guidelines to receiving the Holy Spirit by not expecting that the HolySpirit speak by himself but rather create a stimuli in your heart that enables divine utterance, also speak as the Holy Spirit prompts not at your own wish and then you keep drinking until you get full but be careful of some hindrances to receiving the Holy Ghost like; a lack of faith or a lack of yieldedness, rely not on outward actions.
The second part focuses on the value of speaking in tongues as there have been much ignorance about speaking with other tongues, others know that tongues are the initial evidence of the baptism in the Holy Ghost, but they don’t understand the scriptural purposes for speaking in tongues as it can be different in use and purpose , many reasons was discussed at length in this book.
I will like you to understand that the main purpose of speaking in tongues is that it is a supernatural means of speaking to God as stated by the author, according to 1 CORINTHIANS 14:2 which says For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue SPEAKETH NOT UNTO MEN, BUT UNTO GOD: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
Notice, we are not talking to men when we speak in an unknown tongue; we are talking to God. In other words, God has given us a divine means by which we can speak to Him supernaturally.
The author make us to understand another value of speaking in tongues which is a means of spiritual edification according to 1 CORINTHIANS 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue EDIFIETH HIMSELF [builds himself up]; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. The author said ”
In studying along this line, I noted a number of years ago what Greek scholars tell us about the word “edify.” They say we have a word in our modern vernacular that is closer to the original Greek meaning. That word is “charge.” The word “charge” is often used in connection with a battery. If the battery in an automobile runs down, we hook it up to a power source and charge it up. In other words, we build up the battery until it has the power to do what it was made to do!
So we could paraphrase First Corinthians 14:4 like this: “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifies himself, builds himself up, or charges himself up like a battery” In other words, as we pray in tongues, we are charging up our spirits by the power of the Holy Spirit! “The author justified
Tongues also help you to pray in line with the perfect will of God, the Holy Ghost not only knows what God’s will is, but He will also never lead us away from the Word. That means as we yield to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to help us pray, He will always lead us in line with what God has said. Paul talks about this particular role of the Holy Spirit in our lives to help us pray out God’s perfect will.
In ROMANS 8:26-27, Likewise the Spirit also HELPETH OUR INFIRMITIES: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF GOD. Notice that phrase “helpeth our infirmities” in verse.
Aside all these, Kenneth Hagain discussed more scriptural purposes for speaking with other tongues, as a means of magnifying God, helps us to stay conscious of the holy spirit’s presence, tongues aid you in worshiping god, stimulate faith, gives spiritual refreshing, best way to give thanks, praying in the spirit brings your tongue under subjection, protects you from the contamination of the world and praying in tongues is the introduction to the gifts of the spirit
Part three is on the scope OF speaking with tongues starting with five common misconceptions about speaking in tongues which are:
Misconception #1: ‘You aren’t saved unless you’re baptized in the Holy Spirit and speak with tongues.’
Misconception #2: ‘Tongues aren’t for everyone.’
Misconception #3: ‘You can’t pray in tongues at will’
Misconception #4: ‘All tongues are prayer’
Misconception #5: ‘Tongues are just the ability to speak in a foreign language.’
Also common excesses regarding speaking in tongues
Excess #1: Fighting the Devil in Tongues
Excess #2: Praying Loudly in Tongues Brings More Power
Excess #3: ‘Travailing Prayer’ in the Flesh
Excess #4: Doing What Does Not Edify in the Presence of the Unlearned
I will conclude with theses lines of prayer from the author;
May we be sensitive to the Spirit. May we be sensitive to His touch when He arrests our attention. May we know what He wants. May we respond to His prompting that He may manifest Himself through us and demonstrate Himself among us through signs and wonders and through diverse miracles and distributions of the Holy Ghost.
May we respond in the crisis of the hour and in the crisis of the day. And so shall we be ready for whatever arises. We will flow with the Spirit, and out of our innermost being shall flow rivers of living water. Then the dry places shall spring forth in beauty, and those who are thirsty shall find water to drink. The spiritually dead shall be raised and revived, and life shall be made manifest everywhere. And we shall rejoice and be glad and declare that You have done it. All praise and honor and glory will be given unto You, for You deserve it and You are worthy.
