This word has been in my spirit for the past two days. You see, many things will go wrong and many people will go gaga in the midst of a mighty move of the Spirit both in the local church and in the Body of Christ if things are not properly set forth in order.
In the Body of Christ today, we have many innocent and sincere Christians who are passionate about the manifestations of the Holy Spirit but who get off course along the line.
Many times we put the blame on these innocent folks but truth is that a sizeable number of them haven’t been exposed to sound teachings that will guide them in their new “unfamiliar” spiritual terrain.
From New Testament teachings and from ministry experience, I have found out that lots of folks in this category haven’t been able to establish a vital link between the renewing of their minds and their capacity to function in the things of the Spirit.
Dad Hagin once relayed a vision where he saw the Lord Jesus saying to him the following words, “There is a move of the Spirit that will be lost to this present generation unless they are taught and led into it”.
Very strong words here! This underscores the role of teaching in the move of the Spirit. Now there are misleading statements that a believer should be very careful of soaking in HOOK, LINE AND SINKER.
Sometimes these statements appear harmless on the surface but they are very dangerous if they are not treated with the principle of balance.
One of such statements is this, “The things of the Spirit cannot be TAUGHT; they can only be CAUGHT”.
Sometimes some Quotable quotes (not balanced) have landed many believers into trouble. They forget that statements must always be situated in proper context.
For instance, I can’t teach you the “spiritual syllables” you use while speaking in tongues but I can teach you the simple steps to being filled with the Spirit which will thoroughly prepare your heart in faith for the experience.
So, CONTEXT IS EVERYTHING dear friend. Somebody might say, “Don’t mind that Hagin of a thing. Everything is not all about visions and divinely-granted appearances; we need the Word to establish that”.
Well, we’ll look at the Book of Corinthians. First, you need to realize that some of the epistles of Paul in the New Testament were DIRECT ANSWERS to questions that brethren earlier asked him in order to put things in proper context.
For instance, the Corinthian Christians were acquainted with the manifestations of the Holy Ghost.
They had the gifts of the Spirit operating in their midst but many of them were spiritual rookies when it comes to DIVINE ORDER AND PROTOCOL in the operations of the Holy Spirit.
Remember that as pronounced as the manifestations of the Spirit were in their midst, they had an HISTORY IN THE FLESH.
They were coming from the background of idol worship and they hadn’t renewed their minds and hadn’t been taught thoroughly about the dividing line between what they experienced during idol worship and what their expectations of and response to the move of the Spirit should be.
So, there could be a Holy Ghost manifestation during church service and somebody would just stand up to make the most blasphemous statements about the Lord Jesus Christ, plus exhibiting some other tendencies that contradicted the character of God.
This led to confusion among the brethren and a letter was written to Paul to seek clarification along these lines.
Paul’s response shows the indispensable role of TEACHING in the move of the Spirit.
It tells us that the negative patterns noticed during church service were a direct offshoot of LACK OF TEACHING and also A LACK OF DISCONNECTION FROM BACKGROUND EXPERIENCES and this was OCCASIONED BY LACK OF RENEWING OF THE MIND.
In his response, Paul first said:
1 CORINTHIANS 12:1
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you IGNORANT.
Paul first pinpointed IGNORANCE as their challenge. The word “concerning spiritual gifts” in the original Greek manuscript implies “spiritual operations” in general.
So it is “concerning spirituals” or “concerning spiritual operations”.
Second, Paul talked about their history and background in idol worship which implies that these folks hadn’t renewed their minds thoroughly from such excesses.
1 CORINTHIANS 12:2
Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.
Third, Paul spoke very pointedly and emphatically about THE REVELATION OF CHRIST as the centrality of all spiritual operations, and that any digression from such is TOTAL HERESY.
1 CORINTHIANS 12:3
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
Notice here that the Apostle Paul said, “I give you to UNDERSTAND”.
That means UNDERSTANDING IS KEY IN SPIRITUAL OPERATIONS and it also implies that IGNORANCE IS THE BANE OF THE MOVE OF THE SPIRIT.
That’s why TEACHING, and I mean SOUND TEACHING is important.
Fourth, Paul then began to TEACH to about:
(a) Spiritual gifts, administrations and operations – 1Cor.12:4-11.
(b) The anatomy of the Body of Christ – 1Cor.12:12-27.
(c) Ministry gifts or governmental officers in the Body of Christ – 1 Cor.12:29-30.
(d) The need to press into spiritual operations – 1Cor.12:31.
(e) Agape i.e. the God-kind of love as the PRIME MOTIVATION for the operations of the Spirit – 1Cor.13.
(f) Divine order and protocol in spiritual operations, most especially the vocal operations of the Holy Spirit – 1Cor.14.
It’s very clear therefore that Paul took enough time to TEACH these folks.
And when he was going to conclude his thoughts on the subject matter, he made an emphatic statement which is a guide for the Church in all ages and generations:
1 CORINTHIANS 14:40
Let all things be done DECENTLY and in ORDER.
So, why do we then turn around to say that the things of the Spirit cannot be TAUGHT; they can only be CAUGHT.
Indeed I believe what the Lord Jesus Christ told Dad Hagin in that vision, “There is a move of the Spirit that will be lost to this present generation unless they are taught and led into it”.
People need to be properly taught so as to be well guided into the operations of the Spirit.
There’s a way we BEHAVE in church and there’s a way we respond to the things of the Spirit in church.
The same Apostle Paul once wrote to Timothy:
But if I tarry long, that thou mayest KNOW HOW THOU OUGHTEST TO BEHAVE THYSELF IN THE HOUSE OF GOD, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
Many sincere folks are out there walking in the shallow waters of the Spirit and often they make a gaffe.
In such instance, many Pastors have not also helped matter in the sense that instead of teaching, guiding and encouraging such folks, they bash, blast and lambast them and label them as “carnal” or unserious.
The resultant effect is that those folks get discouraged and abandone their adventures in the Holy Ghost all together.
But I believe that TEACHING will set a lot of things in order here.
By God’s Grace, the GREATEST RESULTS I have ever gotten in terms of the operations of the Spirit in ministry came as people’s faith was being built as I TAUGHT.
To the Glory of God, I have witnessed hundreds of people receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior after I TAUGHT the Word.
I have seen lots of people get baptized in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues after I TAUGHT them (at a meeting, about 163 people spoke in tongues for the first time).
I have seen HEALINGS AND DELIVERANCES after I simply TAUGHT the Word (including deliverance cases that bewilder the human mind).
But chiefest among all is that I have seen people function in the things of the Spirit flawlessly and become more skilful in the Holy Ghost over the years after I TAUGHT them with SIMPLICITY over time.
All of these are to the Glory of the Lord alone. Jesus be praised forever. The reason I mentioned them is to underscore the imperativeness of teaching.
I can say with humility from ministry experience that LOTS OF GOD’S PRECIOUS PEOPLE are willing to experience the operations of the Holy Ghost in their lives but for lack of proper teaching.
Imagine someone who has been taught over the years that to pray for 30 minutes, it is not easy at all and it is A TUG OF WAR.
And then imagine another person who has been taught that to pray in tongues for five hours at a stretch is FUN – it’s just ENJOYING YOURSELF IN THE HOLY GHOST.
You need not to be a prophet dear friend to know that both of them will function in the things of the Spirit DIFFERENTLY.
What’s the difference? THE QUALITY OF TEACHING. Nothing More! Nothing Less!!!
As the Coming of the Lord draws nearer by the day, I have a witness in my heart that more of God’s precious children will flow in the Holy Ghost like never before but I also believe that the Lord Jesus, the Head of the Church, is counting on spiritual leaders to set things in proper order and show them how things are done.
When this is done, Christ will be GLORIFIED, the Church will be EDIFIED and we, by the power of the Spirit, will turn in the harvest of the earth to the praise and glory of the Lord alone.
