Acts 8:34-36 NKJV
So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?”
Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.
Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?”
My wife and I travelled to a country on invitation for Drama Seminars and Workshops and series of ministrations. After about two weeks of drama school and workshops, the participants were broken into groups for practical drama presentations which they would display at a Drama Night before invited guests and church congregation. The night was very great as one group after the other came out presenting their inspiring drama productions. The best and the most inspiring one of the four presentations was a particular group that made a drama on Heaven and Hell with highly creative stage lighting and good stage movement.
The message was very strong before the whole people. Heaven and Hell scenes were presented as unbelievers and backsliders people were rejected at the throne of God and Satan carting them to Hell, while the others were being welcomed into Heaven. It was a very strong presentation.
After the program that night, the Pastor of the church, who did not participated so much in the Drama training, came to us and appreciated the Drama Night, but made a complaint. We were astonished when he said, he liked the whole program of the night, except the particular Drama that elaborated the matter of Heaven and Hell. He said, such messages may not be appropriate for people at this time because it scare some people away from the presence of God; especially the youths and children.
We were embarrassed at his comment. We were so shocked that a Pastor would shy away from the messages of Heaven and Hell because it could scare people away from coming to church. We told him right there, that the youths and children who were watching “Harry Porter” and “Lord’s of the Ring” and “Bat Man – Dark Knight” in the comfort of their homes and were not scared, should never be spared with the message of Heaven and Hell.
That is one of the ways we have removed The Ancient Landmark. We have substituted the Inspirational Messages of God with the Motivational Messages of Men. Many Pastors prefer to make the congregation feel relaxed and joyful at every service so that we would not scare them away from the church. We love when we have the crowd of people without the raw Word of God. Pilling up Congregational Members that have no Sound Word of God. We sing and dance in the :Lord’s presence, but sins and immorality still thrive amidst us, because we are never confronted with the truth by the men of God.
Paul Said in 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 KJV
And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
That was the Ancient Landmark.
Inspirational Messages devoid of “enticing words of men’s wisdom” but full of the “demonstration of the Spirit and the power of God”. that was the Ancient Landmark. But we have shifted the Landmark.
We now invite Motivational Ministers who can draw the crowd with their enticing words and sweet tongues, presenting Psychological lectures and Philosophical Discourse instead of the preaching of the undiluted Word of God. Many motivational teachers illustrate their teachings, making references and giving Examples of Secular and worldly men and women who had made it in life.
What happened to Biblical Characters who first made it from grass to grace? Joseph, Daniel, Gideon, Esther, Deborah, Mary Magdalene, etc, all made it from NOTHINGNESS. There is nothing wrong about knowing the stories of these secular professionals and business men, BUT THEY CAN NEVER BE OUR STANDARD, AND SHOULD NEVER BE MADE AS POINT OF GODLY REFERENCES, when there are many better examples in the Bible.
Esther and Daniel and Joseph were all slaves before they got into the Palace to control the kingdom. They are better examples.
Today, many of our Youths and Children know the story of many professional Career and Business men and women more than the stories of many Biblical Characters, because of the over emphasis made by many of these Motivational Speakers who have come to motivate us to aspire to greater Height than aspiring to know more of God and the fear of God, the beginning of wisdom. In this sense, we have moved the Ancient Landmark.
Warren Burfet, Bill Gate, Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, etc are good people with challenging histories, but we have better characters with more challenging and inspirational histories, which could ground us more in the Word of God and empower us more to trust the Lord God in making us to fulfill destinies.
WE need more of Inspirational Word of God for our daily lives than Motivational Word of men to empower us and strengthen us in our daily spiritual warfare on our journey to Heaven and to enable us survive the present political, economical and social whirlwind raging around us.
