Besetting sins are habitual sins – sins that are committed almost by default through years of constant practice. They are stronger than the human will and require more than choice to lay them down. It takes the radical demand and supply; release and receipt of God’s grace to deal with them.
Due to their insidious nature, they can even survive shallow levels of consecration to God and a great magnitude of the anointing. They can lurk in the dark, unspoken parts of a believer’s life and grow unchecked. They eat at the core of a believer’s hidden life like cancer and they are the devil’s favourite assault weapons.
They are silent tormentors because many a believer is ashamed of exposing them to God’s therapeutic light. They are the secret back doors the devil uses to maintain his grip on the lives of ‘strong’ men and women of God today. They are the unrevealed wounds that are aggravated by believers’ refusal to own up to their existence in their lives.
Besetting sins differ from believer to believer but their impact is the same. Some of them include wild, inordinate affection for the same sex, lusts of all kinds, hurt and unforgiveness, drunkenness etc. A lot of believers struggle with these and many more in private and this is a strong onslaught of hell to prevent God’s saints from enjoying the liberty and freedom from the tyranny of sin that Christ’s abundant grace provides.
It is sad to hear today of different men and women of God come out in the prime of their ministries and own up to either being gay or having extramarital affairs and that sort of thing. We have had huge scandals involving reputable men and women of God shake the church in the past years and a few more of such cases keep breaking out among the saints of the living God even today. This ought not to be so I tell you by the mercies of God.
Here is the thing about besetting sins; they feed on pride to grow. They are watered by darkness and willful isolation. But like pregnancy they cannot be hidden forever. And the day of their delivery is always the ugliest of all days. The Bible says,
“…but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” (James 1:14-15, NIV)
Please do not allow this evil child to be born.
You can submit it to God’s theatre of grace for an abortion. I dare say this is the only kind of abortion permitted throughout Scripture.
