– Pastor Bimbo Animashaun
IGNORANCE is not cured by IMPARTATION; it is cured by TEACHING, or what we call EXPOSITION or EXPLANATION.
You cannot pastor effectively without TEACHING.
Every TEACHER is not a PASTOR but every PASTOR must be able to TEACH “at their own level”.
Nothing complicates the work of a Pastor like an IGNORANT CONGREGATION, and at that level, the Pastor must take responsibility for omission in teaching.
Recently the Spirit of God spoke to my heart in the place of prayer, “WHATEVER CAN BE TAUGHT CAN BE CAUGHT”.
If it can be TAUGHT, then people can reach out to key into it.
Complaining over a congregation will never solve their problem of ignorance.
When it comes to IGNORANCE, then TEACHING is the antidote.
That’s why according to the Bible, the job of the Pastor is to FEED the congregation with KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING.
And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.
PASTORS are therefore FEEDERS – they FEED the flock – 1 Pet.5:2.
The Apostle Paul, teaching the Corinthian Christians on the operation of spiritual gifts, said:
1 CORINTHIANS 12:1
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I WOULD NOT HAVE YOU IGNORANT.
He knew that IGNORANCE is the bane of spiritual operations, and that UNDERSTANDING is the stimulant.
1 CORINTHIANS 12:3
WHEREFORE I GIVE YOU TO UNDERSTAND, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
He contrasted IGNORANCE with UNDERSTANDING, yet he was talking about the operations of the Holy Ghost.
Paul obviously underscored THE ROLE OF TEACHING in flowing in the things of the Spirit.
How come we therefore have some disturbing statements like, “THE ANOINTING CANNOT BE TAUGHT; IT CAN ONLY BE CAUGHT?”.
That’s why people get lost and go into error when it comes to the operation of the anointing.
Here is a beloved one who CATCHES THE ANOINTING but is IGNORANT of its operations, with time he veers off into the flesh and gets off balance.
He doesn’t know that we depend on the Holy Spirit for direction even while dispensing the anointing to meet human needs.
He doesn’t know that the anointing is not used for selfish interest but to edify the Body of Christ.
He doesn’t understand THE FOUNDATION OF LOVE as a spiritual stabilizer to the operation of the anointing, and so on and so forth.
Infact THE ANOINTING ITSELF TEACHES – 1 Jn.2:27, yet people say it can’t be TAUGHT.
Friend, TEACHING IS IMPORTANT in sustaining the move of the Spirit.
In 1 CORINTHIANS Chapters 12, 13 and 14, we see the central themes that Paul talked about with respect to the gifts of the Spirit.
Chapter 12 talks about OPERATION.
Chapter 13 talks about MOTIVATION.
Chapter 14 talks about COORDINATION or GENERAL ADMINISTRATION.
In Chapter 12, we see Paul talk about the OPERATION of spiritual gifts in the sense that he mentioned them and how they are administered.
In Chapter 13, he talked about LOVE as the MOTIVATION for flowing in spiritual gifts.
And then in Chapter 14, he talked about the general COORDINATION and ADMINISTRATION of these gifts under the local church leadership, and he rounded up his thoughts with this most profound statement:
1 CORINTHIANS 14:40
Let all things be done decently and in order.
So, we see the role that TEACHING plays in all of these.
It is my sincere conviction that ANY SUBJECT IN THE BIBLE CAN BE TAUGHT, and by God’s Grace, I can say that A MILLION TIMES!
Since the Scriptures are meant to be TAUGHT, ANYTHING therein can therefore be TAUGHT.
Many years ago, about 18 years ago, when I started direct pastoring in the city of Osogbo, the Lord once told me something about THE ROLE OF TEACHING IN PASTORING.
He said to me, “Any area or aspect of My operation that you want your congregation to experience more at any given time, intensify teaching along that line”.
I tell you friends; I never forgot that. It has stuck with me till date.
The Lord showed me that THE WORD MINISTRY DICTATES THE DIRECTION OF CONGREGATIONAL FAITH, and of course we have a scripture for that:
1 CORINTHIANS 2:4-5
4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
People’s faith will always gravitate in the direction of what they are taught.
So, if I want my congregation to pray more, I teach on prayer more.
If I want my congregation to give more, I teach on giving more.
If I want my congregation to become more dominion-conscious, I teach on THE BELIEVER’S AUTHORITY the more.
The list is endless. People are products of what they hear.
If I want to see happy and flourishing marriages in my congregation, I teach on CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE the more.
On a final note, there’s however A HIGHER PRINCIPLE, and that is “WHATEVER I TEACH, I MUST DO MYSELF”.
I will not teach on Prayer as a Pastor while my members never see me have a solid and robust prayer life.
Whatever we teach, we must do, and whatever we do, we teach, as witnessed to by God’s infallible and unadulterated Word.
This is the pattern set forth by our Lord Jesus Christ Himself – He began both to DO and to TEACH.
The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that JESUS BEGAN BOTH TO DO AND TEACH,
It is the principle of LEADING by PRECEPT and by EXAMPLE.
An effective Pastor is therefore one who teaches his congregation the full counsel of God, as enshrined in Scriptures, and practises what he teaches to the edification of the flock of Christ under his care.
Herein lies the joy of a true shepherd. May true shepherds rise in the Body of Christ all over the world to the praise of the glory of His Name alone.
