Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.
Psalm 143:10
Climbing hills is hard work. If you’ve ever attempted a steep incline while hiking, let alone climbed a mountain, you know how challenging it can be. Your calves ache, your legs hurt, your hips become tired from leaning your body forward to maintain balance. Going downhill is easier in the sense that gravity can assist you; however, the toll on your body, especially your knees, is even greater.
Level ground, of course, provides us with an even and balanced surface upon which to walk or run. We don’t have to work harder to climb up or down. We don’t have to exert extra energy to overcome obstacles in our path.
God’s way is on level ground. He leads us by the route that will take us on the journey for which we’ve been equipped. There will still be some bumps in the road and the occasional detour, but we won’t have to climb over mountains either. Whether we’re facing a mountain or molehill, the Lord has gone before us and made a way through it.
