(Wisdom Pathway For Young Ministers)

– Pastor Bimbo Animashaun

There’s this story of the sons of the prophets trying to fell a beam but in the process, THE AXE HEAD of one of them fell into the water but recovered by Elisha, his spiritual leader.
Let’s read the story in details:

2 KINGS 6:1-7
1 And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.
2 Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.
3 And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and GO WITH THY SERVANTS. And he answered, I will go.
4 So he went with them. And when they came to Jordan, they cut down wood.
5 But as one was felling a beam, THE AXE HEAD FELL INTO THE WATER: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed.
6 And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.
7 Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.

This is an extremely loaded scripture with life-applicable ministry lessons, and this short piece is not DOCTRINAL perse but FIGURATIVE and ILLUSTRATIVE.
At times in ministry, the unexpected and unanticipated happens in a bid to pursuing God’s plan for your life and at such times you truly need a genuine servant of the Lord who is an authority figure in your life to stand by you.

The wisdom in this story is that when those young ministers wanted to embark on that journey to expand the frontiers of their ministry, they carried their spiritual leader along.
There are young ministers today who refer to So-and-so as their spiritual father but So-and-so doesn’t know anything about them and what they’re doing.
They operate in secrecy and when trouble comes, they run to their so-called spiritual father for help.

But that’s a slander. That’s a blackmail. That’s insulting the father’s intelligence. That’s taking access and privilege for granted.
I’m not afraid to teach along this line because of what critics will say; if it is the truth of God’s Word, then there’s no ill feeling towards anyone.

Here’s a young minister who saw a lady, has already proposed marriage to the lady and the lady is on the brink of saying “Yes” to his proposal, just informing his spiritual father about his marital choice with the impression that he hasn’t proposed and that the father should please also join in prayers.
What kind of an attitude is that? It’s a mixture of ignorance, arrogance and insincerity.

That’s why many young ministers run into trouble today. They have this independent spirit and that no one can “control” them.
You see, we need to be very careful in ministry. There are things that people face in ministry that will make them lose their axe head if care is not taken.
Now if you have a spiritual father or leader who loves you genuinely and is praying for you and wants the best of you, please don’t take him for granted.

I once heard about the case of a firebrand young minister on a particular campus (name withheld) some years ago who fell into fornication with a lady who was an agent of the devil.
After they had sex with each other, the lady told him that he had not slept with “a human being”.
She said she was sent from the pit of hell to quench the fire and destroy the destines of young men who were on fire for the Lord and that some had already fallen into her trap.

Now this is a true life story; not a make-up story. The young man ran to his spiritual father and there were series of aggressive ministrations before he got back into shape.
You see, stuffs happen in life and ministry and if care is not taken, one can lose his steam in the call.
When you see young ministers giving up on ministry and getting broken and wounded along the line and can’t really locate their axe head, this is one of the chief reasons – hiding in secrecy and not carrying authority figures along in their work.

I must also say that some young ministers have been mistreated and manhandled by so-called spiritual leaders in the past so there’s trust deficit.
If your son cannot open up to you on the hand that is paining him, it is an indictment on your spiritual fathering.
It is not every robe that we wash in public. The calling of a spiritual father comes with a lot of trust and it requires wisdom and maturity.
Fathers are covers; they don’t expose their sons’ or daughters’ nakedness.
I can see that trust deficit in the Body today. Sons are to be corrected and rebuked when necessary not exposed or destroyed because of personal grievances – that’s not the Spirit of Christ.

I have been privileged of God to encourage a lot of young ministers along this line.
By God’s Grace, I have handled cases where some were written off and in some instances cursed by the people they trusted and I ministered to them and they’re standing on their feet today to the Glory to God.
These things are done silently without making noise, and I don’t divert loyalty to myself – I always encourage people involved to walk in honour towards those who have laboured over them.

I say this WITH THE GREATEST SENSE OF HUMILITY; I cut a covenant with God that there’s no one I pour oil on in ministry that will disappear on the radar, and sometimes those wishes are good but you don’t always have control over what people decide to do.
I will rather go to the mountain, fast and pray than to see a ministry son quit ministry because of overwhelming challenges and discouragement.
I remember one of my sons once organized a crusade; flyers had been distributed around town but one hour to the crusade he called me that he wanted to cancel the crusade.
I asked “Why?”. He said the person bringing the instruments said he would not bring the instruments until he got the balance of his money.

Immediately I made a transfer from my own personal account to him and the amount transferred was more than the balance needed.
I was almost in tears when I saw the turn out at the crusade.
You see, such a son will never remain at that level; it’s a passing phase and it doesn’t mean that we don’t teach people to use their faith.
This is just an example to buttress a point; it is not a license for people to begin to look up to their spiritual leaders for money in ministry.

No! No!! No!!! Develop your faith life and trust God that you will be the one sowing into grace – THAT’S THE BALANCE!!!
Where is your axe head friend? When you look at the picture of an axe , you’ll discover that it has two parts:
(1) The Wooden Part
(2) The Iron Part
I believe that THE WOODEN PART represents THE HUMAN PART while THE IRON PART represents THE DIVINE OR SPIRITUAL PART – that’s the axe head!!!
In the Book of Jeremiah, we’re told that we’re God’s battle axe .

JEREMIAH 51:20-21
20 Thou art my BATTLE AXE and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms; note
21 And with thee will I break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with thee will I break in pieces the chariot and his rider;
That AXE HEAD is your CUTTING EDGE in ministry; don’t lose it.
If you’re using THE WOODEN PART to fell a tree, it will break. That’s what happens when you do ministry in human power – you will break and it can cut one’s life short.
Take care of THE IRON PART – gifts, graces, anointings, zeal, passion, fire , etc. and you will do well to employ the wisdom of the sons of the prophets – get your spiritual authority involved in what you do in ministry.

Another lesson from this episode of the sons of the prophets is found in verse 5:
2 KINGS 6:5
But as one was felling a beam, THE AXE HEAD FELL INTO THE WATER: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! FOR IT WAS BORROWED.
Now this is very straightforward. This young minister BORROWED the axe, so in a way HE WAS NOT USED TO IT.
He had not tested it. This is a sharp contrast to David who told King Saul that he had not tested his armour when he was given Saul’s armour in a bid to confront Goliath.

1 SAMUEL 17:38-39
38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail. note
39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. AND DAVID SAID UNTO SAUL, I CANNOT GO WITH THESE; FOR I HAVE NOT PROVED THEM. And David put them off him.
David was far different from this particular son of the prophet. David knew that YOU DON’T GO TO BATTLE WITH UNTESTED WEAPONS.
This son of the prophet BORROWED the axe, so it was not his own.

How do I mean? You can’t copy what other people are doing to determine what you will do.
You can’t run on other people’s instructions in ministry.
Find your own axe head and make use of it effectively.
Pressure will force you out of the will of God and by that you begin to lose your axe head.
On a final note, this young man eventually got his axe head recovered.
How? He cried out to his Master, and his Master Elisha did something about it, thus he found his axe head.

2 KINGS 6:6-7
6 And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.
7 Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.
Dear minister, don’t die in silence. Cry out for help. A prophetic instruction or counsel from your spiritual father can lay that issue to rest.

Truth is that many winds and storms have blown in the Body of Christ in this nation and when the enemy thought he had gotten the axe head of some ministers, God used fathers in the Body to calm those storms.
A prophetic declaration or laying on of hands from your spiritual father can terminate that negative cycle and get your axe head recovered.

Therefore trust God as you carry your God-ordained spiritual authorities along to execute God’s mandate upon your life.
It’s my prayer that young ministers all over the world will have their axe heads sharpened more and more for greater productivity and effectiveness, and for those whose axe heads are “lost”, they will find them back in Jesus’ Precious Name, and the Kingdom of God will advance gracefully in our generation to the praise of the Glory of His Name.
I trust this is an encouragement Sirs and Mas?
