Maturing in the Faith

I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
Psalm 131:2

Many people refuse to become who God made them to be because they won’t grow up. They would rather remain limited in their development than risk failing and growing stronger. Even when we’re willing to grow and mature, we may still fear change. It’s scary to move forward into the unknown, blazing a trail into unfamiliar territory.

Although change is scary, remaining a nursing child forever is even more frightening. We would be appalled to see a twelve-year-old still nursing. We would be disgusted to see an adult throwing a temper tantrum like a two-year-old. In the same way, we must be willing to grow, mature, and be weaned from the childish things of the past.

Our Father wants us to become adults, not remain babies. While we are indeed his children, dependent on him for all we have, we also have a responsibility to mature and serve him in the fullness of our gifts.
