(Salient Kingdom Lesson In Your Walk With God)

– Pastor Bimbo Animashaun

Why did Jesus upbraid and reprimand the cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum? Because they did not take responsibility for THE GREAT WORKS OF GOD wrought in their midst.

Jesus said:

MATTHEW 11:20-24
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein MOST OF HIS MIGHTY WORKS were done, because they repented not:

21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if THE MIGHTY WORKS, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if THE MIGHTY WORKS, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

The principle of God’s relationship with man is set forth here, and that is God holds you responsible and accountable for the measure of light that is available to you.

It’s an extremely powerful principle of the Kingdom to be understood for anyone who wants to go far with God.

It is that same principle that tells us that TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS REQUIRED – Lk.12:48.

The cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum experienced “THE MIGHTIEST AND GREATEST MIRACLES OF GOD” yet they did not honour the Lord as they ought to – they didn’t repent.

It’s a dangerous place to be, especially in spiritual leadership.

If God has healed chronic diseases like cancer or leukemia through you in the past and now you’re doubting Him to heal headache through you, it’s a grave sin.

If God has raised several dead people through you in the past and now you are doubting Him to heal chest pain through you, you commit a sacrilege.

If God has over and over again provided millions of naira for you in the past and now you’re doubting Him to provide 50 thousand naira for you, you take Him for granted.

If God gave you triplets in the past and now you’re doubting if He’s ever going to give you one child, then you indite Him.

It’s like God parting the red sea for you and now in the wilderness you’re doubting if He’s going to provide food for you.

That was exactly what happened to the children of Israel, and they, by their attitude of dishonour, grieved and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

You see, God’s expectation for us always is to take responsibility for the measure and degree of light that is available to us, and act accordingly in faith, then shall we see the shinning face of the Lord.

Like I said, the stakes are higher for those of us called into ministry. You remember how Zechariah, the priest, the father of John the Baptist became dumb?

He asked the angel of the Lord how he would know that the divine message brought to him with respect to his wife Elizabeth giving birth to a son would come to pass, and the angel Gabriel said to him that he would become dumb because he doubted the word of God.

LUKE 1:20
And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

Now what was Zechariah’s offence? He asked:

LUKE 1:18
…Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

Now this question was not really different from the question that Mary the virgin asked the angel Gabriel when the latter told her that she would give birth to the Messiah.

LUKE 1:34
Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

While Mary got a direct answer in verse 35, Zechariah became dumb asking similar question.

Now what’s the difference? Was God partial in His dealing with both of them? No, because the Word tells us that there’s no partiality with God – Rm.2:11.

What then was the difference? God expected Zechariah to know better.

God expected him to take responsibility for the measure of light that was available to him because HE WAS A PRIEST, and by reason of his priestly office, he had had encounters with the God of Israel.

But for Mary it was not so. She was a young innocent damsel who wasn’t in the ministry, more so she had no historical reference for the promise that the Lord gave her because such a thing had never happened in human history – that a virgin would give birth.

Whereas Zechariah, apart from being a priest, also had historical reference for the divine promise to him in women like Sarah who conceived in her old age, yet he was still asking unnecessary question from the angel.

That was the difference friends. Truth is that the stakes are higher for us as ministers.

There’s a time that silence is not golden. For instance, look at the encounters that Peter, James and John had with our Lord Jesus Christ on the mount of transfiguration

Matthew 17:1-5 – others didn’t have that encounter, and God would expect that they took responsibility for it.

That’s why speaking in defense of the Gospel of Christ, it would be a crime for people like Peter and John to keep quiet.

Why? Because they didn’t just hear; they saw something – they saw the glory and they were very loud about what they saw.

Consider the following scriptures to prove my point here:

ACTS 4:13, 18-20
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.

20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

2 PETER 1:16-18
16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were EYEWITNESSES OF HIS MAJESTY.

17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

1 JOHN 1:1-3
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

You see friends, they were EYEWITNESSES OF HIS MAJESTY, and they took responsibility for the light available to them – that’s at the heart of true stewardship, submission and followership in the Kingdom.

As an associate Pastor in a ministry, you hear someone spreading fake news and saying something false about your setman and you keep mute about it.

You even show a body language that gives the impression that you’re in support of such propaganda.

Yet you know your setman – how sound he is, his strength of character, his humility, his large-heartedness, his doctrine, manner of life, composure, etc.; everything is Christlike yet you keep quiet.

He has even taken you on various trips, given you stuffs and you have unfettered access to his private life, yet with all of these you couldn’t stand in defense of your setman in the face of propaganda.

What you have just done is that you abused access and privilege and you denied the measure of light you have about him, and that is IRRESPONSIBILITY OF THE HIGHEST PROPORTION.

People do such things in ministry and it is very unfortunate. There’s such as called THE CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE – when your silence is not golden.

Same thing folks often do to the Lord. Jesus is real and He’s real to me. He saves the sinner. He heals the sick. He raises the dead. He prospers the poor. I cannot deny it. Glory to God!

I have seen Him do it in my life and in the lives of several others and I will take responsibility for the light of God in my spirit. Glory to God!

Be responsible. And be accountable – that’s the way to go.

And when you do, you shall see GREATER WORKS THAN THESE.

I trust this is a blessing Sirs and Mas?
